A Summary
The agreement specified ELEVEN key principles: 1. In the nuclear age there is no alternative to peaceful coexistence. Differences in ideology and in the social systems are not obstacles to the nutual development of normal relations based on sovereignty, equality, non-interference in internal affairs and mutual advantage. Therefore the USA and the USSR will: 2. try to prevent military confrontations and will instead conduct negotiations in a spirit of reciprocity, mutual accommodation and mutual benefit; 3. try, as members of the UN Security Council, to prevent situations developing in other countries which might increase international tensions; 4. honour the treaty promises they have made; 5. continue to meet to exchange views on problems of mutual interest; 6. seek disarmament, especially of strategic armaments; 7. seek to develop commercial and economic ties; 8. co-operate in scientific and technological progress; 9. develop cultural exchanges and tourism; 10. set up joint commissions to make sure that co-operation in commercial & economic, scientific & technological, and cultural exchanges & tourism are built on a long-term basis; 11. recognise the sovereignty of all states and this agreement is not directed against any other state.
